What to Expect During an Echocardiogram

Echocardiogram

If your doctor has recommended an echocardiogram, you may be wondering what the test involves and why it’s necessary. At SmartCare Diagnostics, we understand that medical testing can feel overwhelming, especially when it relates to your heart. That’s why we aim to make every step of the process simple, supportive, and bulk billed wherever possible.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting an echocardiogram at one of our clinics offering bulk billed diagnostics in Brisbane, including North Lakes, Springfield, Capalaba, Taringa, and Upper Mt Gravatt.

What Is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram (or “echo”) is a non-invasive ultrasound test that uses sound waves to create moving images of your heart. It shows how your heart muscle and valves are functioning, and it can detect abnormalities in blood flow, chamber size, valve function, and more.

It’s commonly used to investigate symptoms such as:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Dizziness or fainting

Doctors may also recommend an echocardiogram to monitor existing cardiac conditions like heart murmurs, heart failure, or valve disease.

How to Prepare for an Echocardiogram

There’s usually no special preparation needed for a standard transthoracic echocardiogram. You can eat and drink normally and take your usual medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

When you arrive at your selected SmartCare Diagnostics location, whether in North Lakes, Springfield, Capalaba, Taringa, or Upper Mt Gravatt, you'll check in and be guided to a comfortable testing room. Our trained cardiac sonographers will explain the process and answer any questions.

What Happens During the Test?

Here’s what you can expect step-by-step:

  1. You’ll lie on a table and remove clothing from your upper body (a gown will be provided).
  2. The technician will apply gel to your chest to help the ultrasound device (called a transducer) make clear images.
  3. The technician will move the transducer over your chest in various positions while capturing real-time images of your heart.
  4. You may be asked to hold your breath or change position during the scan for better viewing angles.

The echocardiogram usually takes 20 to 40 minutes.

After the Test

You’ll be able to go home or back to work immediately after your echocardiogram. There’s no downtime, and you can resume normal activities right away.

The results will be reviewed by a specialist and sent to your referring GP or cardiologist. If the echocardiogram reveals anything abnormal, your doctor will guide you on the next steps, whether that involves further testing, medication, or lifestyle changes.

Bulk Billing: What’s Covered?

One of the most common questions we hear is: “How much will this cost me?”

At SmartCare Diagnostics, we offer bulk billed echocardiograms for patients with a valid Medicare card and a GP or specialist referral. This means no out-of-pocket expenses for most patients. However, it’s always best to call ahead to confirm your eligibility or ask about any private fees that may apply depending on your referral type.

You can access this service at any of our Brisbane-based clinics:

  • North Lakes
  • Springfield
  • Upper Mt Gravatt
  • Capalaba
  • Taringa

When Should You Book an Echocardiogram?

Your GP or specialist will typically refer you for an echocardiogram if they suspect a heart issue or want to monitor an existing cardiac condition. Early detection can be crucial in preventing serious health problems down the line, which is why timely testing is so important.

If you’ve been given a referral, it’s best to book as soon as possible to avoid delays in diagnosis and treatment.
