What is a CT Scan?

A CT, or computed tomography, scan uses specialised X-ray technology to create detailed images inside the body. It can show bones, organs, blood vessels and soft tissues in more detail than a standard X-ray. CT scans are quick, non-invasive and commonly used in diagnostic imaging.

Your GP may refer you for a CT scan when they need a clearer view of what may be causing your symptoms. We commonly see it requested after an injury, for ongoing pain, for chest or abdominal symptoms or to investigate something that was seen on another test.

Why has my doctor referred me for a CT scan?

Your GP may refer you for a CT scan if your symptoms or exam findings need a closer look or further review. Common reasons include:

• Head injury or ongoing headaches
• Chest symptoms that need imaging
• Abdominal or pelvic pain
• Kidney stone symptoms
• Spine, bone or joint concerns
• Sinus problems
• Follow-up of an earlier imaging result

Your GP will decide the right test based on your symptoms, medical history and examination. CT is not needed for every problem, but it is helpful when more detail is needed.

Are CT scans bulk billed?

Cost can be a real concern, especially when your symptoms are already affecting work, family routines or sleep. Checking fees early helps reduce one more source of stress.

CT scans may be bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders when Medicare requirements are met. Billing might vary with the referral, body area being scanned and Medicare item criteria.

Before and preparing for your CT scan

When you book, you may be asked about your referral, symptoms, pregnancy status or medications. Our team will also ask for details about any allergies or conditions, especially in relation to kidney issues, diabetes or past reactions to contrast dye to help our imaging team prepare safely.

Some CT scans require contrast dye, which helps show certain organs or blood vessels more clearly, although not every scan needs contrast. If it is required, the team will explain what happens and how to prepare more in detail, as well as any other instructions like fasting.

On the day, please bring your doctor's referral, a list of current medications, relevant previous imaging and your Medicare or concession cards. Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (like zippers or buckles) or jewellery and arrive 15 minutes early to your appointment.

What to expect during your CT scan

Most scan appointments take 10-30 minutes, depending on the area being imaged.

You will be asked to lie down on a scanning table that moves through the CT machine with openings at both ends. The radiographer will position you carefully and as comfortably as possible to help you stay still and may ask you to hold your breath for brief periods. These both help create clearer images.

If your scan requires contrast dye, you will likely experience a warm sensation; this is normal and resolves quickly.

After your scan is completed, you can usually return to normal activities afterwards unless you have been told otherwise.

How soon can my GP get my results?

Waiting for results can be frustrating, especially when pain, injury or unexplained symptoms are interrupting work, sleep or family life.

Your GP or referring doctor will discuss the results with you and walk you through next steps such as treatment, monitoring, further testing or referral to a specialist if needed.
