Turning 50 doesn’t suddenly make every ache or skipped heartbeat serious but it is usually the stage of life when changes in breathing, energy or heart rhythm should be discussed with your GP.
Perhaps walking up the driveway leaves you puffed, you’re more tired than usual after work or you’re feeling your heart race for no clear reason. It can be tempting to blame age, stress or being busy and while sometimes that is true, your doctor may want to check what is happening with your heart, lungs or sleep.
SmartCare Diagnostics provides cardiac, respiratory and sleep investigations at our Springfield, Ipswich, Mt Gravatt, North Lakes and Capalaba clinics (services may vary per location), with all referrals accepted and bulk billing available for eligible Medicare card holders.
Why heart and lung checks matter more after 50
Heart and lung problems do not always begin with dramatic symptoms. Early signs can be easy to dismiss because they often look like normal tiredness, reduced fitness or simply getting older.
Needing more breaks on the stairs, feeling tightness in your chest when carrying groceries, or noticing palpitations at night can start to interfere with work, sleep and everyday routines. The uncertainty can be just as frustrating as the symptom itself.
Diagnostic testing can give your GP more information about what your heart or lungs are doing and help guide the next step.
Heart tests that your GP may order
Cardiac investigations can assess heart rhythm, structure, blood pressure patterns and how the heart responds to activity.
A standard ECG records the heart’s electrical activity at one point in time and may be requested for symptoms such as chest discomfort, palpitations or an irregular pulse.
If symptoms come and go, your GP may recommend Holter monitoring. Because it records heart rhythm over a longer period, it can pick up changes that may not appear during a short appointment.
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to assess the structure and pumping function of the heart. It may be requested for breathlessness, a heart murmur, swelling, fatigue or known heart disease.
Stress echocardiography looks at how the heart responds to exercise.
SmartCare Diagnostics provides cardiac investigations including ECG, echocardiograms, stress echocardiography, Holter monitoring, Heartbug monitoring and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring.
What respiratory tests help explain breathlessness?
Breathlessness has many possible causes and can be linked to the lungs, heart, reduced fitness, a recent infection, asthma, COPD, medication changes or other health concerns.
Lung function testing measures how well air moves in and out of your lungs. Spirometry is a common test that records how much air you can blow out and how quickly. Your GP may refer you for respiratory testing if you have:
- Ongoing cough
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Suspected asthma or COPD
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Ongoing symptoms after a respiratory infection
The results can help your doctor decide if you need treatment changes, an inhaler review, more testing or specialist input.
Could poor sleep be causing symptoms?
Poor sleep is often blamed on stress or age, but repeated snoring, waking gasping, morning headaches and daytime exhaustion may point to a breathing problem during sleep.
A home sleep study can assess breathing patterns, oxygen levels and sleep disruption when obstructive sleep apnoea is suspected.
Sleep apnoea can affect concentration, energy, mood and relationships at home. It is also associated with high blood pressure and other health concerns, so identifying it can give your GP another piece of the puzzle.
