Check your eligibility for a FREE Lung Cancer Screening
If you have a history of smoking, you may be eligible for a bulk billed (no out-of-pocket cost) CT scan through the Australian Government’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program.
Early detection can identify lung cancer before symptoms develop, when treatment options may be more effective.
Takes less than 2 minutes. Screening at no cost for eligible patients.
What is lung cancer screening?
Lung cancer screening uses a low-dose CT scan to look for early signs of lung cancer in people at higher risk.
It is different from diagnostic imaging for symptoms. Screening is for people who:
- Do not have symptoms, and
- Meet risk criteria (based on age and smoking history)
Early detection gives your GP the best chance to support your health.
Why early screening matters
Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia. Because symptoms often appear later, it is often diagnosed at a more advanced stage.
This screening program is designed to:
- Spot potential changes early, before symptoms appear
- Give your GP the information they need to guide your care
- Support timely decisions for your health and wellbeing
Taking part in the program is up to you and always coordinated with your GP.
Who is eligible?
Eligibility is based on criteria set by the Australian Government.
This generally includes:
- A specific age range, and
- A history of smoking measured in pack-years
Understanding pack-years (quick guide)
“Pack-years” is a way of measuring smoking exposure over time. For example:
- Smoking 1 pack per day for 25 years = 25 pack-years
- Smoking ½ a pack per day for 20 years = 10 pack-years
This can be difficult to calculate, so we’ve created a simple tool to help.
