When do you need a CT scan?

When do you need a CT scan?

If you’ve received a referral for a CT scan you may have a few questions that a short GP appointment did not allow time for.

What is a CT scan and what can it show? What’s the difference between a CT scan and an X-ray? Does this mean something serious is wrong? And how quickly can you get it done?

A CT scan gives your doctor detailed images of areas inside the body that they want a closer look at. The reason for the scan can range from investigating ongoing pain or sinus problems to double-checking a finding from earlier or other imaging.

SmartCare Diagnostics provides CT imaging at our Springfield clinic, open 7 days a week to support patients across Springfield Central, Greater Springfield, Ripley and the Ipswich corridor.

All referrals are accepted and bulk billing is available for eligible Medicare card holders and approved services.

What is a CT scan and what can it show?

CT stands for computed tomography. A CT scan creates detailed cross-sectional images of the inside of your body, giving your doctor a closer look than a standard X-ray in many situations. These images can provide information about bones, organs, blood vessels and soft tissues, to show things such as:

  • Bone or joint problems
  • Kidney stones
  • Sinus problems
  • Changes in the chest
  • Abdominal or pelvic concerns
  • Areas affected by injury
  • Findings from earlier imaging that need a closer look

During the scan, you lie on a table that moves through the scanner. You may be asked to keep still or briefly hold your breath while the images are taken.

The scan itself is generally quick, although your total appointment can take longer if preparation or contrast is required.

Why CT instead of an X-ray?

X-rays and CT scans both use X-ray technology, but they do not give your doctor the same type of image.

An X-ray can be useful for concerns such as suspected fractures and some chest, joint or spine problems.

A CT scan provides more detailed cross-sectional images, so your doctor may request one when they need a closer look at an area or more information than a standard X-ray can provide.

That may happen because your symptoms need further investigation, an earlier X-ray or scan has found something that needs reviewing, or the part of the body being examined is better assessed with CT.

Why has my doctor requested a CT?

There are many reasons someone may be referred for CT imaging. Your doctor may want to investigate:

  • Ongoing or significant pain
  • Symptoms after a head injury
  • Suspected kidney stones
  • Abdominal or pelvic symptoms
  • Chest symptoms needing more detailed imaging
  • Ongoing sinus problems
  • Spine, bone or joint concerns
  • A finding from an earlier test that needs a closer look

Your referral will tell the radiology team which area needs to be scanned and why the imaging has been requested and not every symptom needs a CT scan. Your doctor considers your symptoms, medical history, examination and the information they need before deciding which type of imaging to request.

Will I need contrast for my CT scan?

Contrast dye is a substance used during some CT scans to make certain areas of the body show up more clearly on the images. It can help the radiologist see blood vessels, organs, inflammation and other areas that may be harder to assess without it.

If your scan requires contrast, it is usually given during the appointment. Some people notice a brief warm sensation when it is administered, which is normal and usually passes quickly.

Before the scan, the SmartCare Diagnostics team may ask about allergies, kidney problems, diabetes and any previous reactions to contrast. You may also be given preparation instructions, such as fasting for certain contrast scans.

The team will explain what is needed before your scan so you know what to do and expect.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Having everything ready can make the appointment easier and quicker. Please bring:

  • Your imaging referral
  • Your Medicare card
  • Any relevant concession cards
  • Details of previous imaging for the same problem, if available

You may also be asked to remove jewellery or clothing containing metal around the area being scanned and a gown will be provided if needed.

What happens during the scan?

You will lie on the CT table while it moves through the scanner and the images are taken.

The radiographer can see and communicate with you throughout the scan. You may be asked to stay very still or hold your breath for a few seconds to help produce clear images.

If your CT requires contrast or other preparation, the team will explain this before the scan.

Most people can return to their usual activities afterwards unless the radiology team has given different instructions.

Are CT scans bulk billed?

Bulk billing is available for eligible Medicare card holders and approved CT services at SmartCare Diagnostics Springfield.

Medicare requirements apply, so not every scan or referral will automatically qualify.

Our Springfield team can check your referral and explain the billing details before your appointment, giving you a clearer idea of any costs before you arrive.

That can make a difference when an injury or health problem has already meant extra appointments, time away from work or unexpected expenses.
