If you wake after a full night in bed feeling like you barely slept, the problem may be happening without you realising it.
Loud snoring, waking with a dry mouth or headache, gasping during the night or struggling to stay alert during the day all give your GP a good reason to look more closely at what is happening while you sleep. Sometimes, it is a partner who notices the biggest clue - pauses in breathing - that you do not remember at all.
A home sleep study records your breathing and oxygen patterns overnight without requiring you to sleep in a clinic.
SmartCare Diagnostics provides home sleep studies, accepts all referrals and offers bulk billing for eligible Medicare card holders.
What does a home sleep study measure?
A home sleep study collects information while you sleep in the comfort of your own bed.
You take portable monitoring equipment home and follow your usual bedtime routine. Small sensors are used to record details such as:
- Airflow and breathing effort
- Oxygen levels
- Heart rate
- Body position
- Breathing events during the night
Together, these measurements give your doctor much more useful information than simply knowing that you snore.
They can show if your breathing is being interrupted, how often those interruptions occur and what happens to your oxygen levels when they do.
What can the results show?
One of the main reasons your GP may request a home sleep study is to investigate obstructive sleep apnoea.
Obstructive sleep apnoea is when the airway partly or completely closes during sleep. Breathing can repeatedly stop or become restricted, oxygen levels fall and your body can briefly wake to restart normal breathing. You may have no memory of these interruptions the next morning.
The study can help show how frequently breathing events are happening, how much oxygen levels change and if your sleeping position appears to make the problem better or worse.
That information helps your GP understand what may be disrupting your sleep and decide what should happen next in your care.
Signs worth mentioning to your GP
Sleep apnoea is not always obvious. You may notice some signs yourself, while others are picked up by a partner. It may be worth speaking with your GP if either of you regularly notice:
- Loud snoring
- Waking gasping, choking or out of breath
- Pauses in breathing noticed by someone else
- Morning headaches
- A dry mouth when you wake
- Feeling tired despite a full night in bed
- Trouble concentrating during the day
- Falling asleep easily when sitting still
- Feeling unusually irritable or flat
- Worry about staying alert while driving
Sleep problems do not always look dramatic and snoring by itself does not automatically mean you have sleep apnoea either. But when it comes with breathing pauses, gasping or persistent exhaustion, it’s worth speaking to your GP, and asking about referral for an at home sleep study to see what is going on.
Poor sleep follows you into the day
Ongoing tiredness can make concentrating harder, shorten your patience at home and make exercise or everyday jobs feel like more effort. When you are already juggling work, children, shift work or caring responsibilities, poor sleep can make an already busy week much harder.
Sleep apnoea can also affect more than energy levels. Repeated interruptions to breathing can cause oxygen levels to drop and place added strain on the body during the night.
Your GP may consider sleep testing if poor sleep or tiredness is occurring, and especially so if they are occurring alongside concerns such as high blood pressure, palpitations, atrial fibrillation or unexplained ongoing fatigue.
A home sleep study makes up an informative part of your broader medical assessment.
What is it like sleeping with the equipment?
One advantage of a home sleep study is that you stay in familiar surroundings, in the comfort of your own room and bed. There is no overnight stay in a sleep clinic with bright lights and interruptions. You take the equipment home, set it up as instructed and sleep in your own bed.
For those who are already exhausted, that can make testing easier to fit around normal life. Parents can stay at home with their family, shift workers avoid another overnight commitment and you do not need to try to sleep in an unfamiliar room.
You will be shown how to use the equipment before the study and the process explained. It is not about creating a perfect night’s sleep, but to collect useful information about your breathing during a normal night at home.
What happens after the test?
After your night of testing, you’ll return the home sleep study equipment to your closest SmartCare Diagnostics clinic so the recorded information can be reviewed.
A report is then prepared by our specialists and sent directly to your referring doctor. SmartCare Diagnostics returns routine reports within 24-48 hours, and any urgent findings are communicated promptly and directly to your referring doctor.
Your GP will go through the results with you and discuss what happens next.
If sleep apnoea is identified, a CPAP trial may be recommended. CPAP uses gentle air pressure to help keep your airway open during sleep, and SmartCare Diagnostics provides CPAP trials as part of its sleep investigation services.
Your doctor may also discuss changes to sleep position, alcohol intake, weight management, nasal symptoms or medications based on your results and health history.
Are home sleep studies bulk billed?
Bulk billing may be available for eligible Medicare card holders and approved home sleep studies. Referral and Medicare requirements apply and our team can take you through the details specific to you on booking.
SmartCare Diagnostics accepts all referrals. If your referral names another provider, you can still use it at SmartCare Diagnostics. As long as it has been issued by an eligible referring practitioner and meets the relevant requirements, you do not need to return to your doctor simply to have SmartCare Diagnostics added to the referral.
If you have your referral, our team can check your booking and billing details before your appointment so you know what to expect - one less thing to carry on your mental load when tiredness is already affecting work, family life and your usual routine.
FAQs about home sleep studies
Do I have to sleep overnight at a clinic?
No. A home sleep study is completed in your own bed using portable monitoring equipment.
Is snoring enough reason to have a sleep study?
Not always. Snoring can have different causes. If it occurs with gasping, pauses in breathing, morning headaches or significant daytime tiredness, it is worth discussing with your GP.
Will the study tell me if I need CPAP?
The study gives your GP information about your breathing during sleep and can help identify sleep apnoea and its severity. Your doctor can then discuss treatment options, including CPAP if it is suitable for you.
Do I need a referral?
Yes. A referral is required. SmartCare Diagnostics accepts referrals from GPs and other eligible referring clinicians.
Ready to organise your sleep study?
